Semi-supervised Learning for Bone Mineral Density Estimation in Hip X-Ray Images

چکیده

Bone mineral density (BMD) is a clinically critical indicator of osteoporosis, usually measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Due to the limited accessibility DEXA machines and examinations, osteoporosis often under-diagnosed under-treated, leading increased fragility fracture risks. Thus it highly desirable obtain BMDs with alternative cost-effective more accessible medical imaging examinations such as plain films. In this work, we formulate BMD estimation from hip images regression problem. Specifically, propose new semi-supervised self-training algorithm train model using coupled unlabeled pseudo BMDs. Pseudo are generated refined iteratively for during self-training. We also present novel adaptive triplet loss improve model’s accuracy. On an in-house dataset 1,090 (819 unique patients), our method achieves high Pearson correlation coefficient 0.8805 ground-truth It offers good feasibility use cheaper opportunistic screening.

Lower Bone Mineral Density is Associated with Intertrochanteric Hip Fracture

Background: A better understanding of how bone mineral density and vitamin D levels are associated with femoralneck and intertrochanteric hip fractures may help inform healthcare providers. We asked: 1) In patients age ≥ 55 years,is there a difference in quantitative ultrasound of the heel (QUS) t-score between patients with fractures of the femoralneck and those with fractures of the intertroc...

Comparison of Singh index accuracy and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry bone mineral density measurement for evaluating osteoporosis

Background: The Singh index is an inexpensive simple method to evaluate bone density, commonly used to assess osteoporosis is based on the radiological appearance of the trabecular bone structure of the proximal femur on a plain antero-posterior (AP) radiograph. The purpose of this study was to compare between Singh index and bone mineral density measurement using dual energy X-ray abs...

Assessment of bone mineral density with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry in pre- and post-menopausal women

Background: Osteoporosis is a chronic disease that contributes substantially to decrease physical activity and decline in the quality of life. Osteoporosis can be diagnosed easily with the use of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) equipment. The aim of this study was to investigate the magnitude of bone loss on proximal femur and lumbar spine LS in pre- and post-menopausal women f...

Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry: Beyond Bone Mineral Density Determination

Significant improvements in dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) concerning quality, image resolution and image acquisition time have allowed the development of various functions. DXA can evaluate bone quality by indirect analysis of micro- and macro-architecture of the bone, which and improve the prediction of fracture risk. DXA can also detect existing fractures, such as vertebral fractures...
